Forest and Freshwater Ecosystem Responses to Climate Change and Variability at US LTER Sites

چکیده
Abstract Forest and freshwater ecosystems are tightly linked together provide important ecosystem services, but climate change is affecting their species composition, structure, function. Research at nine US Long Term Ecological sites reveals complex interactions cascading effects of change, some which feed back into the system. Air temperature has increased all sites, those in Northeast have become wetter, whereas Northwest Alaska slightly drier. These changes altered streamflow affected processes, including primary production, carbon storage, water nutrient cycling, community dynamics. At direct dominant driver altering ecosystems, other indirect or disturbances stressors unrelated to more important. Long-term studies critical for understanding impacts on forest ecosystems.

Climate Change, Ecosystem Variability and Fisheries Productivity
Climate-driven variation on the timing and location of phytoplankton blooms has profound effects on the number of larval fish and invertebrates surviving and recruiting each year, and ultimately on the structure and dynamics of marine ecosystems. The spring phytoplankton bloom is the only source of food for many fish and invertebrate larvae. The degree of spatial and temporal overlap of the spr...
متن کاملCommunity and ecosystem responses to recent climate change.
There is ample evidence for ecological responses to recent climate change. Most studies to date have concentrated on the effects of climate change on individuals and species, with particular emphasis on the effects on phenology and physiology of organisms as well as changes in the distribution and range shifts of species. However, responses by individual species to climate change are not isolat...

متن کاملDynamic responses of African ecosystem carbon cycling to climate change
Global climate change has been modifying ecosystem carbon cycling, which has produced feedbacks on climate by affecting the concentration of atmospheric CO2. The importance of biospheric CO2 uptake or release to climate change has generated great interest in quantifying the dynamic responses of terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycling to climate change. However, less attention has been given to Afr...
